Dialect

Bo (to his friend): Yeah! I seen it on Youtube!

Me (flying out of the other room like a bat out of hell): Did you just say, "I seen"!?!?!?!

Bo (and every other kid in the room): Yeah, I did! It was on Youtube.

Me: Yes, but did you say, 'I seen'?

Bo: Yes.

Me: It's I saw it. Seriously. Don't ever say 'I seen' again. Nobodies do NOT say 'I seen', you hear me boy?

Neighbor girl: Yeah, you live in Iowa, it's 'I saaaawl'

My husband and I are always talking about how his relatives say words. Like "retched" instead of "reached," and "hold" instead of "whole." My kids pick up some of it, but I'm super-picky about grammar and "speaking proper English," so I'm forever correcting them.

Yes, you must keep Bo's speech skills in line with his intelligence. He can't go around saying seen when he is as smart as he is!

that's hilarious. I have no toleration for grammatical errors... misprounounced words because you're a kid are one thing, but rednecking words... that must not happen.

henry likes to say, "I seeded it." my dad says twice like twEYEst, with a t on the end, and now henry's adding t's to the end of everything, but i'm not sure if it's because of what he's heard, or if it's a genetic thing.

I also hold the grammar corrector position at my home.

Two posts now? I'm beginning to think your a language snob. I correct my kids all the time, but try really hard to bite my tongue when it is another adult. Even if they just pronounced height with a "th" sound.

Sassy says ain't on purpose and then slides her eyes over to see if I'm listening. Little brat...bless her heart...

Just today my mom asked me what was wrong with a sign at the big W mart. (It was a misplaced modifier.) She was always correcting us, and now I do it to my kids. That actually doesn't bother me. I'd rather have them speak correctly than listen to "I seen... We was..."

Oh dear did someone leave to door open and let the Iowa in?

I'm fighting a battle against Pittsburghese too. Can you believe they cannot pronounce their own city? "Picksburgh" indeed!
