Millie, We Try. We Try.

On the way to school, Bo began his routine of asking me questions to which I don't know the answer.

I began my usual method of putting it all on J. "Let's ask daddy tonight, he'll know the answer, he loves history."

"What's history?"

"It's the things that have happened in the past---all the stuff that has happened before you and I were even alive, that's history."

"Well, I know what it's called when your parents are both dead."

Concerned silence.

"It's technology!"

Wha?

Then I do what I have become a master at doing in just the last 2-3 short years. Figuring out what the heck my kid is talking about.

Technology, technology, technology, technolo....OHHHH!

"You mean geneology?"

"Yeah! That's it! What the heck is technology?"

Just go ask Kip.

Hee hee. It would have been funny if Kip had been singing about genealogy. :)

"Yes, dead people are great... you make me saltivate... always and forever..."

Dang Millie- did you just make that up on the spot?? You're good!

For some reason I started singing "Vibeology" by Paula Abdul. "Tech-no-logy...."

Well, what the heck is it then?

Technology: What your parents don't get 'cause they are old.

Seriously, you need to somehow set up a camcorder on your head (I'll let you work out the details) and walk around all day recording these gems.

You'd be rich yo.

That ability parents gain to translate childspeak into English has always been remarkable to me. I think it's a huge part of the famed mother's intuition. I can do it with students now, too, even the
nonverbal ones. "Oh, he gave us the icon for barbeque sauce and signed 'please' not because he wants to eat plain barbecue sauce but because he wants chocolate and the BBQ looks like chocolate. He thinks it's chocolate time because we saw a balloon outside this morning and he thinks it's someone's birthday. Give him a couple M&Ms, he'll be fine." Other teachers stare dumbly on. Hey, I'm a mom. And no one understands a chocolate craving like me...

Ben is so earnest. I love the way he thinks, the way he expresses
himself, so confident that people will get it. That's a sign of good
momming - you take the time to connect the dots from history to
technology to geneology. We deserve honorary degrees by the time our kids turn 5.

You have reminded me of an oh, so funny story that I think I'm gonna have to tell on my own blog.

technology... genealogy. I love it when I have no idea what my kids are talking about. Jordan just wrote in a journal entry for school that something was "hellee cool." I thought, good gracious, is my kids writing cuss words? So I asked him. THe h was actually an r, and the word was really. Glad we cleared that up.

I'm sure Al Gore could answer the question....

You are fast! Bo is a smarty!

By the way, I have spent entire upper division history classes trying to define history.

You know how to reach Kip? Sweet.

So basically I don't have to worry about geneology until both my parents are dead. Sweet!

Love it, made me laugh out loud, after I put some ice cream in my mouth... Now for your next post.
