This morning as I was driving Bo to school he mentioned how he was excited to find out what other kids did to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day. After laughing aloud, I had to gently inform him that his father is just as unique and quirky as he is, and chances are, no one else had cake and learned about the Spanish Revolution and Henry David Thoreau's, Civil Disobedience---in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
We, on the other hand, partied hard with chocolate cake, friends, and a nice long history lesson from J.
In other news, on Sunday night while I was working, J played a game of Sorry with Danyo. He was so entertained by it, that he grabbed our Flip camera and discreetly filmed the game. I have a lot of videos of my kids. This one is probably my favorite.
In keeping with our MLK tradition, here is a picture of our cake. There are two candles to represent our second year of celebrating as a family.
I'm really looking forward to Groundhog's Day. It's one of my favorite holidays.

I think that is the cutest video of a 2 year old playing a board game ever!
Only because I haven't started my 2 year old on board games and taken a video yet.
Watch out Danyo!
Wow, Danyo is growing up! So cute!
I think it's great that you guys celebrate MLK day with an actual celebration.
Sowwy Dad! Awesome. Plus, I'm so down for a history lesson and chocolate cake. Why? Cause that's how I roll. I'm so at your place mext MLK day! MLK 4-Ever Biotches!
Can I have Danyo? Please? We celebrated too... or at least, we had a great big long conversation about it for family home evening.
I'm totally making a cake next year. I think cake is brilliant all the time, no matter what you are celebrating. Or not celebrating, for that matter.
Oh my cutness. Is "Sowwy Dad!" too common place for bumper stickers and t-shirts?
y'all are so cool. i don't know anybody who celebrates mlk day, aside from enjoying the day off (henry and i did). that cake is awesome, just like something i would make. and "ahh! sowwy dad!" was too cool.
My whole family gathered round to see danyo. I love how when J got a 4, he made sure to show the camera so we would know he wasn't cheating.
I love this. Love it, love it, love it.
"Sowwy Dad" is probably the cutest thing EVER!
Kudos for celebrating MLK day! Peanut was just dying to get me to read her Weekly Reader on MLK. Why are kids so political? I just don't remember being that interested?
Loved the video. "OH Sorry DAd, oh man"
When she was little, my brother's wife thought MLK was milk, saw it on the calendar and said "Mommy, why do we celebrate milk day"? Her mom thought it was so funny, that she said, "and not just any milk, but 'chocolate milk' day!" So they drank chocolate milk and read about MLK, and continue the tradition today.
Great way to teach your kid manners! My kids could definitely use some practice saying, "Sorry".
Love the MLK cake and celebration. You guys are too much fun!
You can tell Bo that the Meikles TOTALLY talked about civil disobedience, civil rights, and even had a little mock sit-in. We did not, however, have cake. We will next year.
Very cute video. I love how all the pieces stayed on one side of the board and his counting? Adorable. We talked about MLK on his day, but not near to the depth you did. We got a little hung up when our children (even with prompting) couldn't think of ANY OTHER martyrs.
i think danyo uses the same counting system brigitte uses: it's based on a lot of 8's: 2, 8, 18.
I could just eat him up! I seriously adore your boy.
I celebrated MLK day by sleeping and sitting around in my jammies most of the day.
