Bo has been, for some time now, a bit obsessed with a show called Ben 10. I have always loved ANYTHING to do with my name, so I kind of get it. You can imagine how many things I've found to do with the name Nobody...
The show is a little over his head. I mean, the premise isn't, and it's pretty awesome for a wee 5 year old----but he barely gets more than "superhero alien".
His age comes out particularly when he's referring to the different aliens by name.
A few months ago he kept talking about one of the aliens, "Sh*tway". Of course it made me laugh but I couldn't figure out what word he was replacing, to see if I could find out the real name of the alien. When I finally googled about 12 different things, I found his name, Jetway. I tried to tell Bo that his name was Jetway---just to save both of us some future embarrassment, but he wasn't interested. He was sure I was wrong. After all, I hadn't watched the show.
Last Sunday our neighbor called to see if we had any cream of mushroom soup for his roast. We didn't and he asked for cream of celery as a substitute. Celery is a bad word in this house, so we didn't have that either. J mentioned how he couldn't believe people would willingly use cream of celery as a substitute and unbeknownst to us, Bo's interest was piqued with all the talk of celery.
I kept hearing him use a phrase along with the name of one of the Ben 10 aliens. I hear all kinds of random things as a result of what's on tv, so I didn't really pay attention. I just figured, the alien XLR8 was the alien of the hour.
Later that night at dinner he and Avee were objecting to some green beans I made, without having tasted them. I told Bo, "they have the same sauce on them that is in your favorite casserole, I know you'll like them."
He asked excitedly, "Oh really? It's made with cream of accelerate?"
I had written all about this and was waiting to publish, when...
Yesterday Bo was recounting to me his afternoon of participation in a "fun week" that our 9 year old friend is doing to raise some money for the summer. He talks nonstop about it. He was telling me about the snack. I told you celery is a bad word in our house---he didn't even know what it was. "This green log thing that you can put cheese or peanut butter on, I got mine with both". I said, "Oh yeah, that green stuff is called celery, is that what it was?"
"Yeah, yeah! It was accelerate and peanut butter!"

We are all things Ben 10 here... I feel your pain!
Your little bug sounds darling. Don't you just love it when they say things wrong?
What's with the celery drama? I don't love it, but I can definitely think of worse things.
*giggling uncontrollably*
It took me almost 40 years to like celery. It has to be in something or slathered in PB.
Love his cute words!
Celery is only good if it is covered in peanut butter or ranch dressing.
I taught Bo's Sunday school class awhile back and we were talking about families. Everyone went around the room and told the class who was in their family and their names. Bo could not believe that I had a Ben in my family too. He said, "That's my name. Are you serious that is your husbands name." All through class he would just randomly say, "Now I know 2 Ben's" or "that is so cool, that you have a husband named ben." I am thinking that he was pretty proud to have someone named "after him"!
accelerate, lol! What 5 year old wouldn't want them some of that? Not that they need it obviously, but want, that I get!
btw, celery is what I crave when I've had too much sugar. Isn't that weird? I think it's because I heard once that it takes more energy to eat celery than it has calories, so somewhere in my demented mind I figured that it would be good to eat that after my sugar binge. You know just to help with those extra calories laying around.
mm, i just had me some celery sticks with jiffy. yum.
i love that you write this stuff down about your kids. i always forget it and then it's done and gone in a week.
I like accelerate with cream cheese. And I don't know how you keep from just gobbling that boy up. he's adorable.
And did you know you don't have to wait to publish anymore? predate. It's awesome. ;) Unless your predated date happens before the climactic cute comment happens. hmmmm. but still...
I LOVE accelerate especially with peanut butter! Hold the queso!
i'll eat celery on occasion, but i can't say that i've actually bought any in the last eight or ten years.
Mmm, accelerate and some ranch dip...
Maybe "Jetway" is pronounced "Sh*tway" in the alien language?
And I couldn't figure out a way to work it in casually, so let me just throw it in randomly: handcops.
Jill is so into Ben 10 too. She just has to have an omnitrix for her birthday! Yes, my five year old DAUGHTER loves it. Interesting, eh? She & your Ben got along so well when they were younger and I think they'd still be good buddies if they ever got together now. :) Maybe setting up meeting times at the berry bush and everything! :)
my husband would be happier in your house than he is in mine... he HATES celery. I still buy it and eat it... in potato salad, in homemade chicken noodle soup, with peanut butter, or ranch dip... it's good stuff. Josh just keeps picking it out of stuff. I am sure he would prefer a celery free existence... but I'm not givin it up!!
Accelerate? It must be so entertaining to live in your home. All I get to hear is "OH MY DOSH!!!" from Livie.
"He was sure I was wrong. After all, I hadn't watched the show"
DUH Nobody!
I have about 4 cans of cream of accelerate in my pantry. I use for tuna casserole which is a fav of ours.
I know you are keeping track of this, so please add to your list:
-Uses aspirin for headaches
-has an unnatural amount of cream of accelerate at home
CELERY!!
What did celery ever do to you?? LOL!! You do know that when you eat it you actually burn more calories than it has in it!? It's like a magic food. Of course when I layer on the cream cheese it probably takes away some of the "magic".
priceless! oh how i love that kid!
My 6 year old has an undying passion for all things Ben 10. I got suckered into buying the Ben 10 Laboratory at Ross on Saturday. It was marked down to 11.99! In return my son promised-PROMISED!- to buckle down and practice reading more.
Still waiting.....
